Herd Bull in Deep Grass, Buffalo National River #49,599

I like this kind of oddball composition. This big herd bull was looking around in deep grass up to his eye level. At first it frustrated me, but then I played with it and went to manual focus to place him in focus behind all the cover. This big bull was an early herd bull but he faded as the season went on and was eventually replaced by another bull.
Bull Elk Fight #1, Boxley Valley 2008  #51,473

Catching bull fights is like catching light in a bottle sometimes. 2008 was a huge year for me with bull fights. I saw 4, captured 2, and feel really happy with one that I shot on November 9. I have enough bull fight pictures to fill these elk galleries, but I do have a 6 page, god-knows-how-many-images bull elk fight gallery if you are interested. The power and spectacle of an elk fight is amazing. It is worth the 120 odd trips to the valley during to rut to get them. This fight was right next to the road.
Herd Bull Elk Compacting His Herd to Fight   #51,579

One of the very best signs there will be a bull fight is the compacting of the herd by a herd bull. Herd bulls will put their herd in defensible location, usually up against a corner or fence. This big guy is moving his cows into the corner. After they are huddled up, he runs out to meet the challenge.
Bull Elk Crossing Buffalo River in Fog           #52,402

This was an "almost got" picture that I lost because of weather. It was taken in fall color but also morning fog. If I could get one back for the year it might be this picture. The big bull is following his herd as they migrate up the bluffs behind the buffalo. In this frame he is drinking from a pool in the buffalo as he slowly crosses to the bluff trail. I probably can get a decent 8x10 out of this, but I wish I could get more.
Bull Elk With Steamy Breath  #56,002

An early hard frost gave me this steamy breath shot. The herd bull is lording over one of his lady loves just snorting. This was one very hard photo to take. Even in raw, with its normal latitude, the brilliant white of the frosty grass against the dark body of the elk was real hard to get right. This exposure is pretty good, but it was very hard to manage with back and top lighting.
