Herd Bull at Sunrise, Buffalo National River #39,090

This is one of my favorite elk photos. I was shooting with a friend down in Boxley Valley. What caught me was the cross light and the geometric pose of his antlers.  This photo was ultimately chosen by Arkansas Wildlife Magazine as a back cover. I think it was chosen because it is not the customary raised head elk photo. It is also a snapshot in the life of an elk.
Big Bull by Cabin, Boxley Valley  #39,674

This photo is memorable because it was so unlikely. While it is true the satellite bull elk run all over the place during the rut, wandering mavericks can be less common other times. This big guy just showed up near an old sagging cabin. It was a different kind of experience for me to actually have adequate light for an elk photo. This was one of the big herd bulls. .
Elk Grazing by Barn, Boxley Valley at Sunrise #47,614

I like to take pictures in different kinds of light, especially unusual light. These elk were grazing in heavy dew just as the sun rose over the east rim of Boxley Valley. The light was filtered through fog, and bouncing all over the place from the dew. The fog, the dew, and the morning light rendered a soft, water color-like image. One of my all time favorites. No antlers to be found, just a photo-painting.
Young Bull in Boxley Garden  #48,610

There are times when I laugh out loud at the behavior of elk. I am sure the owner of this garden would not laugh though. It is pretty hard to fence elk out of your garden, and this owner had given up. This young bull was thoroughly enjoying himself when he popped up his head to have a look at me. Cute little guy. This is just after shedding velvet as you can see from of the color of his antlers.
Cow Elk Nursing Calf with Bull Elk Nearby  #51,962

I like to tell the story of the life of elk in Boxley Valley. This was taken during the rut. This cow elk is nursing a calf born in the spring. The herd bull in the distance behind the fog grazes quietly and occasionally lifts his head to survey the field for challengers.
I like to take bull pictures where the bull is not the center of attention. While fog makes me crazy sometimes in Boxley Valley, it can be used as a resource in a composition to blur the background and focus the image.
