Buffalo National River and NW Arkansas
After a day off due to bad weather, I was anxious to get out this morning and burn some pixels. The elk were hanging back except the 14 animal bachelor bull elk herd that I have seen now 5 times. Today all of them were out in the same field just north of the mill pond.
The really great news is that many have completed their rubbing, and better yes, I saw the first serious sparring of the fall season in 2009. 2 5x5 sparred hard for about 15 minutes right in front of me. Sadly it was just behind a small rise, so I could not get any decent pictures.
These were the little guys, and I have a lot of these, so it was not so disappointing. I was pleased that we are now clearly making one more transition, we are one step closer to the rut, and with the first sparring, and reports for some limited bugling,
After the elk, I decided to do some riverwhacking and scout out some fall locations for river landscapes, and potential elk crossings. It was a beautiful morning to get some pictures. But none of these will rival what the fall offers. Color is probably only a month off now too, so we are heading for prime time.
We are going to the valley tonight for another pass at the animals so there will be a second report. See this mornings pictures.
