Buffalo National River and NW Arkansas
This was one of those days when it was very foggy and the earth seemed to swallow up the elk in Boxley Valley. The most dependable herd has been the one at the intersection of 21 and 43. Apparently Friday night they slept near the back of the field, so they never really got in closup range.

Mary Ann Hicks of the Ponca Elk Education Center said she heard a couple of bugles when she was tending her horses in the valley.  We heard nothing this morning, but it is still early. Its about 2-3 weeks away now.

There is a doe and twin fawns in the field just north of the Buffalo River Bridge at the south end. For a few days I have seen these animals. Occasionally there are deer in the fields on the south side of the river down there.

Today's get turned out to be a juvenile Blue Heron. I did not realize they had a white phase, but the little guy is hanging out at the Boxley Mill Pond and he is not too timid yet. Got some useful pictures.

Turned out that the best pictures I got today were at home. I will post them here, but they are from Compton, along old Erbie road, 19 on the map. We have a large deer herd up here.

The trumpeter swans are still in the mill pond. They seem like a pretty reliable fall back to the elk if they are not cooperating. They are quite close to the road on an old beaver dam.

The light was just not that good this morning. We even had fog on top of Gaither Mountain, our home.
