Arkansas Wildlife Blog and Gallery
Buffalo National River and NW Arkansas
Well this blog now enters its third week, and second calendar month. Readers may have noticed, I have created an archive off the home page so that it doesn't become cluttered up too badly. Everything I have written in these blogs is still archived, but entries will disappear off the home page as they age.

Today was another fog out kind of day. Another day with no elk, probably due to the warm spell we are in. That will probably turn later in the week with the coming rain, no doubt related to Gustav.

I did get one picture today that I think I can sell. I managed to catch the great white egret in a naturally framed photo at the old mill pond. I caught it just as it was taking off. ISO 1600 in the gloom, but with some credible photoshopping, it is a pretty good image. Like most of these gloomy pics, it comes off kind of painterly.

After that I decided to go to the Ponca low water bridge and see what the day offered. The white egret cooperated with a fairly good close-up. Also I shot a few pictures of wild flowers. It is always wild flower season here, but in the spring it really goes crazy.

Another go at catching the spectacular white winged crow came up empty. I didn't see it today.

A couple of small bucks in velvet crossed the road in front of me. I managed to shoot one out the car window before he disappeared. This was halfway up Gaither Mountain heading north out of Ponca.

I don't look for the elk situation to change much until mid-week.

Great white egret taking off at Boxley mill pond. Shot at ISO 1600 in the gloom. Thank god for noise reduction software and all the fine folks at Adobe. This could be the best for September.
