Buffalo National River and NW Arkansas
Pretty foggy morning in the valley. The herd is settled in the second field. We could hear at least one challenger bull and the dominant herd bull bugle at each other, but the fight never happened. Perhaps it will happen this evening. The fog was heavy but it offers the opportunity to get some unusual, dramatic kind of pictures. The herd pattern is pretty stable now.

Heavy fog greets viewers and photographers.
Bull elk protects herd from satellite bulls. It is expressive to de-emphasize the bull in a composition. Placing the big guy out back avoids an ordinary composition.
Calf elk feeds in foreground as bull grazes behind them. I like to place the animals in context rather than just get a huge picture of the cow and calf.
After fog lifted, bull bugles as he migrates behind the cane line. The steam of his breath is a nice touch. The negative space ahead of the bull is emphaszed by the limb in the background.
