Buffalo National River and NW Arkansas
New Patterns Emerging
I went to one of my customary elk trails this AM and no elk were present. This is a first for about 3 weeks. Since this is a northern trail, and since I could not even hear the elk bugling, I am virtually certain they have headed south now and will pop up down there somewhere. My best guess is that they will emerge just south of the observation pullout, but nobody knows for sure. It is a simple matter to survey the valley for elk, so I recommend driving from Ponca to the 43/21 intersection to locate the elk. We are between patterns.
Although I did not see a single elk, I did have a small whitetail buck wander into the river. This is my first whitetail in the Buffalo River, generally I get my best whitetail pictures near home in Compton, or even in my back yard.
Today's pictures:
Boxley Valley Update 10/02/08
Whitetail returning to the hollow.
Drinking from a small rapids
Still more drinking, nice sunbeam.
Crossing a pool, heading back.
Notes:
These were shot as the river fog was blowing around. Difficult lighting conditions but moody and interesting. Off hand I like the two top pictures the best. Same old, same old. ISO 800, wide open. RAW (I hardly know what to do with normal light anymore.)
