Buffalo National River and NW Arkansas
This morning was terrible fog so I decided to hike up the river. My focus is slowly turning to other subjects as the rut winds down. I will continue to take elk photos, but I am mixing it up now. Also, this is the Christmas season and I need to work on my prints, displays and all that. (yuk)
We are at the end of fall color too, but there are great pockets of color here and there. I hiked up the river today to get some up close elk shots, but no crossings occurred. I pretty much only chase exceptional elk photos any more unless there is just an extraordinary animal in the field or a fight. My goals are set for elk landscapes. I like the picture above and I think I may print it as a 12x36 to sell.
Lately I have been working on landscapes, with an emphasis on HDR, high dynamic range photography. I believe no photo is literal, and what an artist goes for is plausibility and the emotional feeling that one feels when viewing a natural scene. Most nature photographers love the wild. I think we need to express those feelings in our work.
Today had a couple of odd moments. After digging through the cane line I sat my equipment up on a good perch to get a river crossing that never happened. Apparently along the way I picked up a walking stick on my camo cap. After sitting a while, it kind of peaked over the brim at me. A nice critter, this guy was about 4 inches long with a heavy body. Since the elk didn't come to me, I went to them for the picture above. After that it was a slow walk down the river for landscapes, most of them triple exposures for HDRs. A couple of examples are below.
Over the next couple of weeks I will be working on some tutorial entries and expanding my guide to local photo destinations.
