Planning ahead and shoot preparation improves your chances to have a successful shoot.
Equipment Checklist:
Make sure your battery is charged, bring spares.
Make sure you memory card is empty -- bring extras.
Setup your camera before you arrive. I always preset at ISO 800 and maximum aperture, aperture priority (AV).
Have the lens on you intend to use first.
Bring your tripod.
Mental Preparation
Core belief: there is always a picture.
Have a plan.
Pre-visualize your shots. Mental rehearsal.
Have a fallback plan(s).
Be opportunistic.
